The American artist Ellsworth Kelly developed his own abstract and monochrome style in the 1950s in opposition to the European Modernist trend and in contrast to the prevalent style of Abstract Expressionism. His geometric/organic forms can be traced back to his fascination with the visible world, including the array of plant life.
