History From a historic villa to the Centre for Global Dialogue

In 1926, silk manufacturer Carl Martin Leonhard Bodmer and his wife, Anna Vogel, commissioned a residence in Rüschlikon, a district of Zurich situated above the lake, offering spectacular views of the Alps.

In 1995, the estate, including Villa Bodmer, was sold to Swiss Re. Over the next three years, a modern pavilion was added to the property, and the Centre for Global Dialogue officially opened in November, 2000.

Art & Architecture Innovative architecture, design and art dot the Centre

Discover a selection of captivating artworks as you explore the Centre. Outside, Sol LeWitt's Sloping Progression nestles among the trees, its stacked concrete blocks reflecting the artist's fascination with seriality.

Nearby, Peter Fischli and David Weiss's Concrete Landscapes invite interpretation as both abstract landscapes and dynamic organisms shaped by nature’s forces.

Inside, Ulrich Rückriem's Untitled granite mural greets visitors with its monumental simplicity, while Günther Förg’s playful interventions in the villa’s architecture reduce its opulence, creating a dialogue between history and modernity.

This interplay between past and present extends to the Centre’s very architecture. In 1995, an international competition was launched to design a modern conference building that would complement the original neo-Baroque villa. The jury awarded first prize to Zurich architects Marcel Meili and Markus Peter, whose vision seamlessly integrated contemporary design with the site's historical character.
