In 1961, Gerhard Richter defected to West Germany. He expressed his radical rejection of art in the GDR by starting over in the numerical classification of his works (No. 1, 1962). He has since produced an eclectic oeuvre, ranging from Photorealism to Pop Art to Minimalism to Abstraction and from black, white and grey tones to intense colour.
Gerhard Richter eschews ideological messages and symbols. In his own words, his works have "no style, no composition, no judgment".
