Lubomir Varbanov appointed Swiss Re Managing Director and Head Public Sector Solutions APAC
Swiss Re is delighted to announce that Lubomir Varbanov has joined as Managing Director and Head Public Sector Solutions APAC based in Singapore.
Lubomir joins Swiss Re after 20 years at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, the world's largest international development financier. His most recent role was Head of New Business, Infrastructure, APAC, based in Singapore, where he led origination and execution activities to grow the business from U$980 million to US$1.8 billion in annual investments over 3 years. He also served as non-executive director on the board of Hero Future Energies, a leading Indian renewable energy platform. Prior to his assignment to Asia, he acted as Global Head of Equity, Infrastructure and Natural Resources Group and Chief Investment Officer (Equity), Real Sectors, based in Washington DC, where he helped grow IFC’s principal investment equity business in infrastructure to AUM of US$3.5 billion, with record investments of US$1 billion and 3-year average annual cash income of US$550 million.
Prior to IFC, Lubomir worked in the private sector in Europe, most recently as Head Corporate Finance at BG Group plc in London (a FTSE100 multinational engaged in infrastructure and natural resources, now part of Shell).
A dual citizen of Bulgaria and the UK, Lubomir holds a BA in Business Studies and Languages from Regent’s College, London and an MSc in Finance from London Business School.
At Swiss Re, Lubomir will manage a team of highly-motivated professionals across multiple locations (including Australia, China, India, Japan and Singapore) to engage with governments at sovereign and sub-sovereign level, development banks, multilateral organizations and 'third sector' entities / NGOs to develop innovative risk transfer solutions in order to facilitate economic development and increase societal resilience and financial inclusion.
