Professor Aiden Doherty, a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow and Professor of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Oxford, spearheads a research group dedicated to creating reproducible methods for analyzing wearable sensor data in large-scale health studies to elucidate disease causes and consequences. His team has developed innovative methods to objectively measure physical activity in the UK Biobank, which are now actively employed by thousands of researchers worldwide to explore new associations with cardiovascular disease, depression, mood disorders, and others. Their findings have revealed that the lowest mortality risk in the UK Biobank cohort is observed at the highest level of accelerometer-measured physical activity, whether total, moderate-intensity, or vigorous-intensity.

In 2015, Professor Doherty was honored as one of only three EU Marie Curie Award winners, selected from approximately 9000 fellowship holders, for his significant contributions to health sensor data analysis. He has also contributed to the formulation of guidelines on the use of mobile devices in clinical trials, in partnership with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) supported Clinical Trials Transformation Initiative on “Mobile Clinical Trials”. As a Principal Investigator, Professor Doherty has been awarded £4.7M, as a Co-Investigator, he has contributed to £17.4M, and he has mentored junior colleagues to secure £6.0M in fellowships.
