Helen is the newly appointed Secretary General of the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation, a non-profit NGO hosted at the Eucentre in Pavia, that develops scientific, high-quality, open resources for earthquake hazard and risk assessment around the world.

Since 2005, when she obtained her PhD in Earthquake Engineering from the ROSE School in Pavia, she has had a scientific coordinating role in a number of European projects dealing with seismic hazard and risk assessment, and she has undertaken a number of consultancy activities for the private sector, with a particular focus on the assessment of seismic risk due to both natural and induced seismicity. She also coordinated the development of the first open European Seismic Risk Model (ESRM20) and served as an Executive Committee Member of the European Facilities for Earthquake Hazard and Risk (EFEHR) consortium.

She is the author/co-author of 185 publications, peer reviewer for over 20 international scientific journals and Editor of Earthquake Spectra. She has presented at numerous conferences and invited lectures and has received awards including the 2009 European Geosciences Union Plinius Medal and the EERI’s 2012 Shah Family Innovation Prize.
