Kim is a freelance occupational health research consultant with a part time professorial appointment at the University of Huddersfield. In 2011 he was appointed an OBE for services to occupational healthcare. Having gained a diploma in osteopathy in 1968 he ran a clinic in Huddersfield for many years. Gradually, he moved sideways to a career in research after studying for a PhD in biomechanics, ergonomics, and epidemiology related to back pain at Huddersfield Polytechnic, which he gained in 1987. Kim has worked with the university in various capacities ever since, including directorship of the former Spinal Research Unit. He is now member of the Centre for Applied Research in Health. Kim has an active international profile for research primarily at the health-work interface, with a focus on advising policy makers. He is an Expert Advisor to the Department for Work and Pensions, and a former Member of the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council.
