Dr. Lauren Mudd is a senior engineer at Applied Research Associates and has 12 years of experience in wind engineering. Dr. Mudd is heavily involved in the development of HurLoss, ARA’s catastrophe model for estimating insured losses due to hurricanes and is leading the effort at ARA to capture the effects of climate change on future hurricane risk. She got her start in the modeling world during her doctoral studies, where her research consisted of a multi-hazard assessment of climate change impacts on design wind loads for US buildings and structures. She has published several peer-reviewed journal papers related to hurricane risk analysis and simulation. Dr. Mudd has developed synthetic hurricane risk models for several basin regions in order to improve design standards for offshore structures and has led the development of wind, wave, storm surge, and current design criteria for several offshore wind farms. She has supported FEMA through rapid wind field modeling of US landfalling hurricanes and has performed several post-event damage surveys of tornado and hurricane events. Dr. Mudd is a licensed Professional Engineer and serves on the ASCE 7 wind load task committee developing and informing wind design standards in the US.
