Dr. Matteo Spada is a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Sustainable Development (INE) of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). His research focuses on assessing the risk and resilience of complex systems, and their relevance in the broader context of sustainability, energy security, and critical infrastructure protection. He supports decision-making processes through methods such as Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) and has been involved in the development of several interactive MCDA web tools.

Matteo has extensive experience in both basic and applied research, as well as project management and coordination—from leading tasks and work packages to overseeing entire projects. He has been actively involved in acquiring projects, preparing proposals for authorities, the European Union, scientific institutions, and industry. He has also supervised students at all levels, including Ph.D., MSc, BSc, and internship students, and has taught courses from BSc to MSc and MAS/CAS programs.

He holds a master’s degree in physics from the University of Bologna and a Ph.D. in Geophysics from ETH Zurich. Before joining ZHAW, Matteo worked as a Research Associate at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), Italy, focusing on enhancing the seismic network's detection of micro-earthquakes and the imaging of the upper crust. He also spent nine years as a Senior Researcher/Risk Analyst at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland, where his research addressed the risk and resilience of energy infrastructures and the development of MCDA tools.
