Ian Hamilton is former Executive Director of the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change and a Professor in Energy, Environment and Health who studies the intersection of climate, energy and health.

His research background is in evaluating climate mitigation actions in the built environment their impact on indoor and outdoor environmental conditions and associated health and wellbeing outcomes. This has involved developing an observational database comprising the energy performance and energy use of every building in the UK and evaluating the impact of government energy efficiency programmes. In doing so, he applied epidemiological approaches to the study change and impact. He also led the development of the UK’s health impact assessment model for evaluating all UK building energy efficiency policy and its impact on indoor environmental conditions and population health, and used in the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence guidance on excess winter death in the UK.

Ian led the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, a collaboration comprising 35 leading research institutions and UN agencies with over 120 collaborators providing an independent, global monitoring system dedicated to tracking the emerging health profile of climate change. Each year, the Lancet Countdown produces its report, published in the Lancet medical journal, that develop and communicates the evidence base on the trends around the drivers and impacts of climate change on health.

Ian has been involved in in the Lancet Countdown since its inception in 2015 and previously was a Commission member of the Lancet Series on Climate Change Mitigation and Health (2009) and the Lancet Commission on Health and Cities (2013).
