Using data and AI to take the guesswork – and the TV news – out of claims adjustment

07 Feb 2025

Remember that first-day feeling on a new job? You're eager to support, curious how your role will look in action and itching to hit the ground running! That's how I felt when I experienced my first cat event as a new claims adjuster.

To understand the magnitude of damage following this thunderstorm, we headed to the scene. When we got there, we found a TV news crew setting up in the corner of a parking lot to shoot a story on a "devastating flood." But there was no flood to report. The reporter merely trudged in his rainboots through a muddy puddle from a clogged drain.

Don't get me wrong, the media plays a vital role before, during and after a disaster. Re/insurers monitor the news to get a sense of the location, nature and magnitude of the storm, but when trying to triage claims after a potentially catastrophic event, the 6 o'clock news doesn't always present the whole story. Obtaining fast and reliable data is one of the challenges insurers face when deploying adjusters to make clients whole as quickly as possible.

During a recent Swiss Re webinar, "Disrupting claims with data and AI,"  I spoke about this very concept and how Swiss Re's Rapid Damage Assessment (RDA) platform synergizes data and artificial intelligence to take the guesswork and uncertainty out of understanding damages to generate added value.

Learn from industry experts including Charles Clarke of our technology partner Guidewire and Greg Moraski of our Florida-based client, Security First. Greg explains how RDA helps his claims managers spend more time present with their customers and less time struggling for reliable answers.

Whether you're a first-time claims adjuster or an experienced veteran, Rapid Damage Assessment exponentially improves your understanding of the magnitude of damages so you can drop the juggling act of choosing between efficiency, accuracy and customer experience.

In a world where "3-5 business days" no longer satisfies customers looking to rebound from a catastrophic loss, adjusters using RDA can often respond to claims in a matter of hours – and make decisions long before it's time to tune into the evening news.
