If not life insurers, who then? The strong case for metabolic health programs for life insurers & their insureds

As the life insurance industry grapples with estimations of long-term mortality improvements post COVID-19, the continuous deterioration of overall metabolic health in the US population begs the question of its impact not only today, but in the future. Currently, 72% of US adults are obese or overweight, while 53% have diabetes or pre-diabetes.1,2

Our recent publications on weight loss injectables (also known as GLP-1 receptor agonists) highlight their promising potential, but also note that the cost and side effects may limit their widespread effectiveness. Importantly, while GLP-1 receptor agonists have a place, there is strong evidence now that significantly improved metabolic health, including diabetes remission and weight loss, can be achieved in a large proportion of people through supported nutritional changes and other lifestyle improvements.3

This support can encompass different modalities including various educational strategies, group support, the possibility of remote coaching or physician care, technology in the form of engaging apps giving feedback and nutritional guidance, as well as biofeedback using glucose or ketone monitoring.
