Insuring a renewable future? Leverage 160 years of risk expertise and meaningful capacity to support your journey

31 May 2023

We have launched a new Centre of Competence for Renewable Energy, aiming to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with clients to manage risks through the energy transition. The dedicated team will work through existing underwriting teams, and clients will be able to leverage the centre for efficient capacity coordination and cutting-edge knowledge, while maintaining their existing local relationships. Find out more about how we write renewable energy risks.

The world is set to add as much renewable power in the next five years as it did in the past 20. The Swiss Re Institute estimates that investments in green energy will generate additional energy-sector related insurance premiums of USD 237 billion by 2035.

But for the insurers and operators playing a vital role in supporting this transition there's a complex risk landscape to navigate. New technology, climate change and large, complex projects can leave gaps in risk knowledge and underwriting data. Changeable outputs and the evolution of storage and distribution technology can put operators and investors under pressure.

Building on existing capabilities

At Swiss Re we are already working alongside our clients at the forefront of renewable technology. Our engineering, marine and property underwriting teams are helping the market provide comprehensive multi-line insurance product offerings that support the development of new technologies by offering support in four ways:

  1. Acting as a discussion partner to help manage the knowledge and data gap of frontier technologies.
  2. Enabling the coordination of smart reinsurance capacity throughout a project's lifecycle, within our engineering, marine and property lines.
  3. Leveraging local market relationships in combination with global expertise networks.
  4. Developing digital engineering solutions to supercharge your insurance process.

Our new Centre of Competence for Renewable Energy further builds on these areas of support.

Launching our new Centre of Competence

The centre pulls together the strengths of Swiss Re's expertise and strong balance sheet into a dedicated team. It's the next step forward in how we help our clients manage their renewable energy portfolios.

Led by Michele Cibrario and Miguel Senac, the centre is already supporting clients on offshore and onshore wind and solar technologies, with plans to support other technologies in the future.

Here's what the new Centre of Competence means for you:

  • Leverage 160 years of risk expertise in new frontiers – by collaborating closely with the Centre of Competence, our underwriters, clients, and brokers now have even more expertise at their fingertips.  With long-standing contributions to industry knowledge (such as the Offshore Wind and Solar Codes of Practice), our team will explore and share best practice to inform conversations around wordings, pricing, and risk management.
  • Efficient risk placement from breaking ground to decommissioning – our Centre of Competence acts as a coordination hub for our renewable energy risks, so you can efficiently arrange capacity through our different and wide-ranging lines of business.
  • Local teams, global networks – our Centre of Competence is a co-ordination and expertise team, working with your existing underwriting partners.

We've got a 160-year track record in helping clients navigate emerging risks with dedicated experts, risk insights and meaningful reinsurance capacity to take on increased levels of risk (or mix of risks) that accompany renewable energy projects.

We look forward to working with you as we embark on our shared journeys to net-zero carbon emissions and a more resilient world.
